Paul Simmon's Artist Statement
This work explores the systems by which information is presented, and how a subversive working practice can negotiate that information, ultimately arriving at an open-ended logic. Structural representations are built through series of layers and materials that alternately erect and negate space to reveal elemental letterforms. The concentric patterns of visual migraines induce a Pop-like afterimage similar to pressing fingers on the eyes: a self-induced tunnel vision. The ephemeral are reified as abstract structures operating off the information grid, mediating relationships between language and the phantasmagoric.
