2009 MFA Artist: Jessica Walker

Jessica Walker's Artist Statement

My photo-based work explores perceptions and interactions relating to human existence specifically those originating in the domestic environments. My concepts employ interior glimpses into and around domestic spaces revealing an unguarded intimacy. These household topographies reveal the tendencies of life through individual possessions and habits, informed by culture, relationships and adaptation. Within these settings, identities as well as memories, are created, nurtured, protected, and altered.  I am interested in both the realities and the fictions that reside in the comfort and sanctuary of homes.

In my current work, I am appropriating photographic images that have been collected from Internet web sites in which people have candidly photographed their own possessions and posted them publicly, typically with the intent of trading or selling the items.  I have focused on photographs of mirrors in this body of work and I am working specifically with the reflections.  I find that there are varying degrees of information about the owner presented unintentionally within the reflections.
